Because his brother Alec suffers from autism, Brent Chase founded a startup together with friends. The students of Northwestern University and the Rochester Institute of Technology in the USA developed a portable technology that uses biometric data to identify stress symptoms at an early stage and then passes this information on to an app. This way, relatives are alerted to an imminent problem. This idea convinced the jury of the Jacobs Startup Competition. The team from the USA was able to take home the winner's prize of 3000 euros.

"Dare to stand out" was the motto of the event with which the organizers wanted to encourage people to pursue their ideas and dreams even against resistance. The Startup Competiton is a competition by students for students, planned and organized by a team of 31 students from Jacobs University. Almost 160 startups from all over the world took part. The ten finalists presented their ideas last weekend on the campus of the English-speaking university in Bremen-Nord. 2nd place went to "Blind-Tech" from Israel. The team from Tel Aviv University developed a portable product for visually impaired and blind people based on the substitution of sight by hearing and touching. “RangeBox" from HTW Berlin (Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft) and the University of Mannheim were happy about the 3rd place. With reusable gift boxes with flexible capacity, the startup wants to help reduce the consumption of packaging and gift paper. The criteria for selecting the winners were the growth potential of the startup as well as the feasibility and implementation of the idea. Around 150 guests followed the competition, where experts gave tips for a successful startup in workshops and investors were also present. Starting this fall, founders can send in their business idea and apply for the Jacobs Startup Competition 2020.
