Jacobs University Bremen honors outstanding students and teachers

Their work sets standards, they are scientifically excellent: At the beginning of its academic year, as is tradition, Jacobs University awarded the Deans Prize to graduates who wrote outstanding bachelor and master theses. In addition, at the suggestion of the students, the university teachers of the year were chosen and the prize of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) was awarded.
For each of the three Focus Areas – Health, Mobility and Diversity – the Deans of Jacobs University awarded a prize at the Annual Opening Ceremony. The former psychology student Shuqing Zhao dealt with the connection between language acquisition and music training in her bachelor thesis. Steven Abreu did research on "deep learning", a subfield of Artificial Intelligence, as part of his Computer Science studies, and Mahad Nadeem Janjua, who studied Earth and Environmental Sciences, did his final thesis on modelling the oil system in the Ogaden Basin in Ethiopia. Tianlin Liu received the prize for the best master thesis for his research on neuroinformatics.

"Every single one of these theses will leave its mark," says Prof. Dr. Arvid Kappas, Dean at Jacobs University. "It is impressive to see the excellent scientific quality our students have shown in their theses."
Outstanding professors of Jacobs University also left a lasting impression on the students. "Extremely committed", "incredibly knowledgeable", "always ready to help" – these are just some of the judgments. The historian Dr. Julia Timpe, the biochemist Prof. Dr. Christian Hammann and Dr. Kinga Lipskoch, the IT-expert, were honored as university lecturers of the year. Dr. Iris Steckemetz received the award for best language teacher.
The prize of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) honors foreign students for their outstanding academic achievements and remarkable social commitment. Andrea Pin Morales, one of the organizers of the Art Fest at Jacobs University, who is studying Industrial Engineering and Management in her third year, received the award.
