On July 1, 2022, around 50 startups from Bremen and the greater region of Northern Germany attended the Startup Summit Bremen, a fair surrounding the interests of entrepreneurship. Three of the booths were manned by Jacobs University’s very own students and graduates hoping to expand their networks for their startup companies. The Startup Summit offers founders and young entrepreneurs the opportunity to increase their contacts and attract supporters along with potential collaborators. In addition to many networking opportunities and presentations, the Sparkasse Bremen Startup Prize was awarded.
The diversity of innovation in Bremen is great, which is also reflected in the contributions made by Jacobs University startups. Startups like WasteAnt, Sharemac, ExoHeal and AIROOT were represented. Their topics ranged from the use of artificial intelligence for more sustainability in waste management, digitization software in the construction industry, the application of robotics in neuroscience, to drone-controlled reforestation.
The young founders are at different points in their careers. While WasteAnt and Sharemac are already established companies and cooperate with industry partners, ExoHeal and AIROOT took the chance to present their business ideas during a pitch to expand their visibility in the market.
“I am thrilled that Jacobs University is finally part of this ecosystem in Bremen. Our community adds to the dynamic and international atmosphere of the summit. It was very inspiring and motivational to see all these young people thrive,” said Sonja Mattfeld, Start-Up Coordinator at Jacobs University.
Innovation and entrepreneurship are promoted at the international university, not only through various modules in the study programs, but also through the J-CUB Start-Up Option: a structure established to actively support all members of Jacobs throughout the entire process of founding a business- from developing their business idea to market launch.
“The support created with J-CUB allows students to purse their studies and get into the details of intelligent systems whilst learning about entrepreneurship and promoting their business in the market at the same time,” Francesco Maurelli, Professor in Marine Systems and Robotics, is convinced.
