Many students appreciate the comprehensibility and the sense of community at smaller universities. The renowned magazine "Times Higher Education" (THE) has therefore compiled a worldwide ranking of the best small universities. Jacobs University is the only German university to be represented there, taking an excellent tenth place.

Small classes, close contact with the professors, intensive support from the first semester onwards, even beyond the classroom, the positive interactions on campus, where the students also live, early participation in research projects – all this is what distinguishes Jacobs University Bremen, Germany, and is reflected in the top result in the THE ranking. “You have the feeling that everyone knows everyone," is how chemistry student Lisa Tichagwa describes living and learning at Jacobs University. "Everyone is approachable, including the professors, which is very helpful indeed," stresses the Zimbabwean.

"I am particularly pleased that this placement once again acknowledges the uniqueness of our institution as a small private university with high demands on research and teaching in an international environment," says Prof. Dr. Michael Hülsmann, President of the English-medium university.

To qualify for "The world's best small universities 2019" ranking, universities had to appear in the THE World University Rankings 2019, teach more than four subjects and have fewer than 5,000 students. The average number of students at the universities listed in the ranking is 2,713. In the academic year 2018/2019, Jacobs University registered just under 1,500 students from over 110 nations for 15 Bachelor's, seven Master's, three Pre-Degree and several PhD programs. The first three places of the best small universities were taken by the California Institute of Technology from the USA, École Polytechnique from France and Pohang University of Science and Technology from South Korea.

In the THE World University Rankings 2019, one of the most important global university comparisons, Jacobs University is listed as one of the 300 best universities worldwide. The English-medium university also achieved top rankings in the CHE ranking, the most important German comparison, and in the U-Multirank.
