Project outline:

Formal Logic and Systems are necessarily limited in their power of computability as paradoxes cannot be eliminated. This limits the application to real-life self-organizing system. Networks are abstractions of real-life systems. They summarize the flow of information or material, as well as the regulatory influences present in the system and they have revolutionized the way we think about collective behaviors in social, cognitive and biological systems.

In this research project we combine these two topics, networks and limits of computability due to paradoxes. By studying self-organization, distributed computation and coordination in networks, we want to identify paradox-avoidance strategies in networks and develop frameworks to enable the emergence and stable co-existence of paradox-free groups of nodes (i.e., of multiple logical 'contexts'). Applications to neuroscience (e.g., to predictive coding), distributed decision-making, and organizational theory will also be pursued in this project.

 

Your tasks and responsibilities:

  • Implementation of a numerical simulation framework for studying paradoxes in networks.
  • Statistical analysis and interpretation of the results with methods from self-organization and network science.
  • Exploration of the implications for various application disciplines.
     

Your profile:

  • University degree (PhD) in Statistical Physics, Data Science, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Bioinformatics or similar.
  • Strong programming skills, e.g., in Python and R.
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment.
  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken.

 

The postdoctoral researcher will be jointly supervised by an interdisciplinary team consisting of (1) a computer scientist, who for many years has served as CEO of global companies, (2) an engineer, who after a successful career in academia is now the managing director of the digitalization department of a large company, (3) a physicist, who has worked on dynamical processes in networks for almost two decades.

Successful candidates should be ideally available to begin in January or February 2019.
