FAQ - Undergraduate Financial Aid

  • What does it cost to attend Jacobs University Bremen?

Tuition and other educational expenses are included in the Cost of Attendance information sheet.

What components may a financial aid package consist of?

A Financial Aid Package at Jacobs University Bremen may contain any, some, or all of the following components:

1.) Expected Family Contribution: These are funds that the family and/or the student can contribute to the cost of tuition and room and board only. These funds do not cover expenses for books, insurances or other fees. The amount of the Expected Family Contribution is calculated by the Financial Aid Office based on the student’s financial aid application.

2.) Scholarships: These are merit-based funds that are awarded based on the student's admissions application. Scholarships do not need to be repaid.

3.) Grants: These are need-based funds that are awarded based on the financial aid application. Grants are subject to annual review of the financial circumstances. Grants do not need to be repaid.

4.) Tuition deferral: The Tuition Deferral Plan is similar to a loan program. Students can postpone paying a part of their tuition through this deferral plan for each of the three years they are studying at Jacobs University Bremen. Students are not required to make any repayments while they are in university. After graduating from or leaving Jacobs University, students receive a six month grace period during which they do not have to make any repayments. If a student decides to enroll in a Masters program after completing their Bachelors degree then the grace period can be extended to 24 months. After the grace period, students go into repayment.

How and when do I apply for financial aid?

You will find all information regarding the application procedure here. Please read the instructions carefully before you start filling out the application. Please do not forget to send scanned copies of all required documents in addition to your application form. Please send them to: sfs [at] jacobs-university.de. You may apply for financial aid when you submit your admission application. The last deadline for applying is, however, June 15th.

What is the income cutoff for financial aid eligibility?

There is no income cutoff since income alone is not the only factor, which is considered. We consider income, tax liability, family size, medical expenses, standard living expenses, which country you live in, your parents’ assets, their ages, and whether they have retirement protection. Because so many factors make each family’s financial situation unique, we do not make our judgments on income alone.

How is financial aid eligibility determined?

Each student’s eligibility is determined through a thorough review of the family’s financial circumstances. This process uses carefully developed guidelines that are used by many leading colleges and universities worldwide. With these formulas and guidelines, financial aid officers are able to determine your family’s ability to contribute to your college expenses. An expected family contribution is then established.

What if my family’s financial circumstances change after I receive my financial aid award?

If there is any change in your family circumstances, which affects the calculation of the expected family contribution, you are obligated to notify Student Financial Services. These changes could be sudden unemployment, an increase in income, a decrease in the number of family members in the household or being supported by parents, or a decrease in the number of family members attending college. These changes may provide a basis on which you may want to ask for a review of your initial financial aid package. This process requires families to submit in writing a specific explanation of their situation, including an itemization of any reduction in income and/or supporting documentation.

Will I get the same financial aid award in future years?

Jacobs University Bremen is meeting your financial need throughout your three undergraduate years. Your initial financial aid package is valid for your three years of studies at the university. If, however, circumstances in your family warrant a review of your financial aid package, you may submit the online application and all supporting documentation by May 1st. In this case, the online renewal application will be reviewed. However, there is no guarantee that your original financial aid package will be adjusted.

My parents are divorced (or are separated or were never married) and one parent is unwilling to submit any information to the Office of Student Financial Services or to contribute towards my expenses at Jacobs University. What should I do?

Jacobs University’s policy for determining the financial aid eligibility of students of divorced, separated, or never-married parents is based on the same principle used to determine eligibility for all of our students: both parents bear the main responsibility for educational expenses. This responsibility is not waived by divorce, separation, or remarriage; thus, both the custodial and noncustodial parent must submit financial data and tax returns. In extreme situations, Student Financial Services may review a request to waive the noncustodial parent’s information. You might reassure the unwilling parent that we will not share his/her information with any other party.

Can I negotiate my financial aid package?

No, Jacobs University Bremen does not negotiate financial aid packages. However, if there is a change in your family’s financial situation, we will re-evaluate your financial aid application. The appeal process does not, however, guarantee a revision in your package.

I applied for financial aid last year. Do I have to do it again this year?

Your initial financial aid package is valid for your three years of studies at the university. If, however, circumstances in your family warrant a review of your financial aid package, you may submit the online application and all supporting documentation by May 1st. In this case, the online renewal application will be reviewed. However, there is no guarantee that your original financial aid package will be adjusted.

When will I receive my financial aid award offer?

Your financial aid application is processed once you have been admitted. It will take between two to four weeks to process your application.

How do I go about finding a job?

On-campus job listings are available at the Campus Jobs Office.

Are campus jobs part of the financial aid package?

No, campus jobs are not included in the financial aid packages. Please note that the financial aid packages do only cover the costs for tuition, room and board. You need to be prepared to cover all additional costs yourself. Please see the Cost of Attendance Sheet for details.

If I have questions or need additional information, and I call or e-mail the Office of Student Financial Services, how long will it take to get a response?

The Office of Student Financial Services makes every effort to respond to questions as soon as possible. During peak periods in the summer and the first few weeks of each semester, however, it may take a few days to get a response. Please contact us at sfs [at] jacobs-university.de or ++49 421 200-4210.

What is your policy towards renewing my financial aid?

Effective as of summer 2012, it is no longer mandatory to submit a financial aid renewal application. We also reserve the right to spot-check any student receiving financial aid at any time.

When is the deadline to submit my financial aid renewal application?

All continuing students who require an adjustment in their financial aid package must submit a Financial Aid Renewal Application by May 1st of each year.
You must also submit originals or certified copies of your most recent tax forms, tax cards or pay slips for the previous 12 months in order to support the numbers presented in your Financial Aid Renewal Application. These documents must be translated into German or English.
