The renowned World University Rankings of the Times Higher Education (THE) magazine is one of the most highly regarded university rankings in the world.
In 2018, the ranking included 1,258 universities from all over the world. Jacobs University was represented for the first time and immediately positioned itself as one of the 300 best universities worldwide.
The universities were evaluated in five different areas: The most important are research, teaching and publications in professional journals and how often these are cited by other scientists. Other factors are the international orientation and the volume of research transfer towards industry. Jacobs University achieved clearly above-average results in all the areas examined.
In its rankings by subjects, Jacobs University’s life sciences offering was ranked as one of the 200 best in the world. In the field of physical sciences, the international, English-medium university ranked among the top 300.
With its rankings, the CHE offers information and transparency to prospective students. CHE rankings are the most comprehensive and precisely detailed ratings list of institutes of higher education in the German-speaking countries.
The CHE investigates more than 300 universities, colleges, and technical colleges. In addition to criteria such as courses, teaching quality, and research, the rankings also gather feedback from students about studying at the various institutions.

U-Multirank: Top Grades for Jacobs University
Since 2014, the independent, EU-funded U-Multirank gives students a new possibility to compare universities in five broad dimensions: teaching and learning, research, knowledge transfer, international orientation, and regional engagement. In 2017’s evaluation, Jacobs University made it into the top five universities in Germany.
All in all, 1,479 universities from 99 countries took part in the ranking, and more than 100,000 students participated on a worldwide scale. Furthermore, U-Multirank is the first international ranking which considers all types of colleges, not just universities.
U-Multirank compares not only the institutions as such, but also individual subjects. Evaluated in the year 2017 were the fields of biology, computer science, electrical engineering, and mathematics.
