04/17/2018 - MOLIFE RESEARCH SEMINAR: WEINBERGER

Tuesday, April 24, 2018 - 13:00
Room/Location:
Lecture Hall of Research II

Talk by:

Christina and Zasha Weinberg, Institut für Biochemie, Universtiy of Leipzig, Germany

Title of the talk:

Discovery and characterization of self-cleaving ribozymes

Abstract:

One of the most sophisticated biochemical properties of RNA is its ability to catalyze chemical reactions. Among such RNAs are those that catalyze their own destruction at specific internucleotide positions. These so-called "self-cleaving ribozymes" are found in a wide variety of organisms and biological contexts. In this talk, we will discuss bioinformatics work to discover novel self-cleaving ribozymes and experimental analysis of their biochemical properties. This work will help to fully understand RNA structure and biochemistry, as well as the biological roles of still-mysterious self-cleaving ribozymes.

All are welcome!
